Iran encourages elections in Syria

The supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, said in a public statement on state television that the war in Syria must end.

For that to happen, he said, Western powers must stop backing the rebels, and Iranians must elect new leadership.

This comes days after Iran partook in negotiations on Syria in Vienna, where nothing concrete was agreed upon, very much because of Iran and the US’s opposing views on the issue.

Until recently, Iran has unconditionally supported the continued rule of Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian conflict that has devastated the country.
